shook her head as she realized there was only one thing that could make her
feel safe, make her forget the ugliness and violence. Make her feel alive.
Before
doubt could set in, Jordan quickly crossed to the adjoining door. She paused for
a heartbeat, listening for any sign of life on the other side, then knocked. No
answer. She tried again. Sanity insisted that she turn away. It was late
afternoon, Gabriel was likely sleeping and she should leave him alone. Hell,
even if he wasn’t sleeping she should leave the vampire alone.
Jordan turned the knob and pushed
the door open just wide enough so she could slip inside. The room was freezing
and black. She blinked several times, her eyes struggling to adjust to the
darkness. Her gaze locked on the only source of illumination, a strange glowing
liquid in a crystal decanter rested on what she assumed was a bedside table.
Drawn by the hypnotic glow, Jordan silently approached the bed. The soft light
of the mysterious elixir danced over Gabriel’s hauntingly flawless face and

Jordan’s room, which was lit by the soft glow of candles and heated like a
sauna, Gabriel sat in complete darkness, the only source of light was the
bottle of Silver Moon now resting on the floor by his feet, and the air was as
chilled as a winter storm.
Unable
to stop himself, Gabriel used his senses to probe the adjoining room. Judging
by the even flow of her breath and steady heartbeat, she was sleeping easily. Thank the Graces.

took another drink. Fuck, he’d lived
nearly a millennium and tonight ranked high on his crazy crap list. He’d
infiltrated is enemy’s stronghold, rescued the girl like he was some fabled
prince charming, managed not to kill his enemies—a boastful feat in itself—and
now, he had her. Jordan was free and
she was here. With him. Goal achieved. This
was what he’d wanted, wasn’t it?
He
finished his glass and poured another.
He
