~The call was instantly answered by a surly growl. “Sleepin’. Call back later.”

“Hang up and I’ll gut you from navel to snout, savvy?”

Brogan’s deep laugh vibrated the phone. “Oh, ‘ey, Cap’n.” There was some shifting and a rustling of sheets. “In the spirit of good faith, I’ll give you sixty seconds to justify waking me up.”

“Off the record,” James stated. He wouldn’t say a word until the vampire confirmed.

“Haven’t you heard? I talk to no one. Ever.”

“I need information.”

“Well, last I checked I’m an assassin not an encyclopedia and my name isn’t Google.”

James ignored the sarcasm. “You’ve been to the Under Realm.”

Silence fell for a long moment before Brogan responded, “Aye.”

“Have you ever come across a succubus?”

“Nay, can’t say I’ve had the pleasure.”

“But you know of them?” James pressed.

Brogan mumbled something in his ancient language. “Aye and most of the lore is wrong.”

When he said no more James asked, “Care to share?”

“You on assignment?”

“Aye.”

“And you need this information?”

His tone hard James said, “Was I wrong to call you?”~
